Waterproof vs. Water Resistant Stopwatches

There is some confusion around the terms 'waterproof''water resistant', and 'splash resistant'. To provide clarity, we use industry-standard definitions and the "IPX" rating system.

Splash Resistant

The stopwatch is resistant only to limited amounts of splashed water (e.g., rain, handwashing). It is not designed to get wet or be immersed in water.

Water Resistant

The stopwatch will continue to function if it gets wet, but it is not impenetrable to water if fully immersed. A 50m rating means it is suitable for shallow swimming but not diving or high-speed water pressure activities.

Waterproof

This means the device is impenetrable by water even when immersed. However, it is an industry understanding that no watch can be 100% waterproof, so ratings define the depth and pressure it can withstand.

Operating Stopwatches Underwater

None of the stopwatches in our range are designed to be operated underwater.

Pressing a button requires breaking the seal to the inside of the stopwatch, which allows water to enter the device and cause damage.

For example, while our Copilote RW3 watch is water-resistant to 5 ATM (around 50 meters), it is not suitable for operation during swimming or diving.

The IPX Standard

We use the industry standard "IPX" scale to define the exact degree of water resistance for specific products, where:

  • IPX0 means the device has no water resistance at all.
  • IPX7 (found on products like the Fastime 28LW stopwatch) means the device is protected against full immersion for a specific period at a certain depth (e.g., up to 1 meter).
  • IPX8 ratings indicate protection for depths of more than 1 meter.

Below is the full table of IPX ratings and definitions.
