Stroke Rate Stopwatches
The stroke rate function is a specialised tool designed to calculate frequency of movement (strokes per minute), typically three strokes. The stopwatch calculates the rate of actions per minute, making them ideal for rowing, swimming, and similar sports.
How it Works: The Base 3 Rule
Most professional stopwatches use a Base 3 calculation. Here is the standard process:
- Start the Function: Trigger the stroke rate mode.
- Count Three Cycles: Start the timer on a stroke and count exactly three full strokes (or cycles).
- Stop: Stop the timer on the entry of the third stroke.
- Instant Conversion: The stopwatch internally performs the conversion and displays the result in strokes per minute (SPM).
Why It Is Useful
- Efficiency Analysis: A coach can instantly see if an athlete's stroke rate is dropping during a set, which usually indicates fatigue or a loss of technique.
- Quick Samples: Because it only requires three strokes, a coach can check the tempo of multiple swimmers in a single lap.
- Real-Time Adjustments: It allows for immediate feedback; for example, telling a rower they are currently at 32 SPM when the target is 36.
