Why use pedometers?
Using a pedometer can motivate you into doing something which will benefit your health. Did you know that more than 60% of adults do less than the recommended amount of physical activity.
The British Health Foundation recommends that we walk 10,000 steps a day to for long term health and reduced chronic disease risk.
But if you want to achieve successful and sustained weight loss then you need to achieve a daily average of between 12,000 and 15,000 steps. You may be interested to know that according to Dr James Hill, co-author of The Step Diet Book 6,000 steps is required to burn off the calories in a large portion of chips!
If you want to help with aerobic fitness then make sure that around 3,000 of your daily steps are taken at a fast pace.
Using a pedometer you can measure the amount of steps you take in a day now, and work out a plan to bring the number of steps you take up to the required level. You can do this by for example, parking the car further away from where you need to be. Phase the increase in steps you need to take by setting a target of increased steps per day to reach your objective over a defined period of time.
